When 3500 civilians are shelled with MIG warplanes, A full legal documentation of AlSaida Zeinab neighbourhood massacre

Date of incident: 18/07/2012

AlSaida Zeinab city is situated south of Damascus, its population is 400 000. Most of the resident in this area originally come from the Golan Heights, where they represent 95% of the citizens in the area.

On Wednesday, 18/07/2012, the members of the cell of Syrian crises were killed, and a big majority of the Syrian population were happy to hear this news, in fact, the citizens of AlSaida Zeinab neighbourhood went out to the streets to celebrate, they placed small borders and started to chant in their masses while a few military barracks were present in the neighbourhood.

The security forces responded to these chants and protests with direct gun shooting at the citizens, this resulted in dozens of casualties and killed a young man from the neighbourhood, named Abdulrahim Sammour. This was followed by the shelling of the area as well as the surrounding land using helicopters.

Approx 3500 civilians went out to attend the funeral of AbdulRahman Sammour, the citizens chanted against the Syrian regime and Basher Al Assad. During the funeral a MIG 23 warplanes shelled protesters with rockets, this resulted in the death of a few people and the fall of a large number of casualties. The warplane then returned to the same place and dropped two shells consecutively which resulted in a larger number of dead people. Some of the bodies were scattered in separate parts and we were not able to identify the victims due to that, in addition to this,  we were only able to get to the scene twice and therefore we were not able to collect all the victims of the massacre.

The numbers of casualties exceeded 400 people and the number of people killed was more than 93, a witness named Abu Osama with the Skype account name: abdfree93 estimated that the number of dead people was 170, however, the Syrian network for human rights was only able to document 117 names in pictures and videos.

We, The Syrian Network of Human rights, seek to protect and defend human rights. We explicitly condemn this horrific massacre which is openly classified as a crime against Human Rights, along with the remaining massacres against the Syrian people – all of which have been committed by Assad forces. We hold the Syrian regime, the Commander in Chief of the Armed forces full and direct responsibility of the massacre. In addition to this, we also hold Russia, Iran and Hizbullah direct responsibility of the killing as they continue to provide the Syrian regime with weapons and money. We call for the United Nations and Security Council to take immediate action and speed to protect the Syrian people and to live up to their responsibilities. We urge them to accelerate their steps in referring all those involved in this massacre to the International Criminal Court.
