The politics of Hama Massacre:

Important report: The policy of the ban of Human rights and media organisations causes a loss of humanitarian shock and prevents the documentation of events (the politics of Hama massacre in 1982)

The politics of Hama Massacre:

We, in the Syrian network for human right would like to verify that the numbers of civilian martyrs which have not been confirmed have greatly exceeded the numbers which are authenticated in names and photos in our own records. There are dozens of cases that we were not able to reach due to the siege which has been imposed by the Syrian regime, which obliterated the evidence of the crimes of many cases; this made it impossible to reach to the customary international standards and requirements.

We also condemn the policy of the ban of human rights organisations and we believe that the Syrian regime is responsible for disallowing them to work inside the country and authenticate, this leads to the disappearance of thousands of Syrian citizens without the knowledge of their destiny. In addition to this, the international community with all its institutions, especially the Security Council and United Nations, are also responsible as they have not imposed the necessary pressure in this particular matter. The Syrian situation is probably the most uncommon situation on this planet as many human rights and media organisations and even relief organisations are banned to work, such as the Syrian local or international networks for human rights.

A strong example which confirms the urgency of the matter discussed in this report is what happened on Friday, 09/03/2012. On that day the Syrian regime committed atrocious criminal acts such as killing and raping women in Ashira neighbourhood and AlRifa’i neighbourhood in the city of Homs. In the beginning the news reached us that a blockade on the neighbourhood was subjected by the army and Syrian regime thugs, and that only 14 civilians were killed on that day, however, the real number of dead people exceeded 225, in addition to the disappearance of a few civilians. The facts of this case were not discovered to an accurate extent until about ten months later and after many questionings and investigations have taken place. This meant that the massacre was forgotten and did not take the required echo in the local Arabian region or internationally even though it was one of the most outrageous crimes against humanity and can be elevated as a war crime. This massacre was one of the most horrendous massacres of the Syrian revolution.

Date of incident: 09/03/2012 until 11/03/2012

Details of the incident

As we were told by some of those who escaped death or had recently healed from their deep injuries and who are in the city of Homs till now, in addition to the witnesses accounts and the gathering of information over a period of several weeks, on Friday morning, a blockade was subjected on Ashira neighbourhood by the Syrian army and Syrian regime thugs which came from the neighbouring neighbourhoods which support the regime. This was followed by the first stage of the continuous heavy shelling which for a period of 18 hours, this caused dozens of deaths and a great number of casualties, the shelling then took place in AlRifa’i and AlAdwiya neighbourhoods.

The civilians who tried to escape and immigrate were mostly women and children; however the Syrian army’s shelling followed them and killed 22 women and 13 children as they were trying to get away.

The second stage following the shelling was the storming of the neighbourhood. The Syrian army facilitated the entry of hundreds of Syrian regime thugs with the aid of tanks, weapons and arms on Sunday morning, 11/03/2012. Following this, summary executions took place. The thugs attacked homes and arrested dozens of the neighbourhood’s citizens, in addition to raping women and slaughtering dozens of citizens with knives, finally, they ended their dreadful acts by filtering those who were still alive by shooting them with guns, aiming at their heads and chests from short distances.

The most difficult issue, as we pointed out earlier in this report, that a few activists entered the neighbourhood after the Syrian army and the thugs withdrew, however, they were not able to verify 10% as the slaughter and rape mostly took place inside homes which were broken into. The truth only started to emerge as some bodies became rotten inside homes and the facts regarding what happened became clarified.

This massacre resulted in the deaths of 224 citizens, and we were only able to document these deaths in names, photos and videos after a long period of time. we did not expect that the number of dead people would be this high, and we confirm that there are still many people missing which were not able to reach or obtain any sort of information about their whereabouts, all this is due to the blockage and the ban which is subjected by the Syrian regime.

We, The Syrian Network of Human rights, seek to protect and defend human rights. We explicitly condemn this horrific massacre which is openly classified as a crime against Human Rights, along with the remaining massacres against the Syrian people – all of which have been committed by Assad forces. We hold the Syrian regime, the Commander in Chief of the Armed forces full and direct responsibility of the massacre. In addition to this, we also hold Russia, Iran and Hizbullah direct responsibility of the killing as they continue to provide the Syrian regime with weapons and money. We call for the United Nations and Security Council to take immediate action and speed to protect the Syrian people and to live up to their responsibilities. We urge them to accelerate their steps in referring all those involved in this massacre to the International Criminal Court.

After two months of continuous hard work by one of our activists in the Syrian network of human rights in Homs we were able through accurate and consistent work and through our visits to many of the relatives in city and dozens of families to verify 224 martyrs names (44 of the victims were children and 48 were women) as we mentioned earlier, this was achieved after much hard work and exceptional efforts:
