Alfan Alshamali massacre – Hama countryside, 02.09.2012

*The date of the incident: 02.09.2012

Given the geographical area the village is located it, Alfan Alshamali (northern Alfan) is located between villages of the Alawite sect. The majority of their residents are hence loyal to the Assad regime. Due to its concrete support of the Syrian revolution, Assad thugs in the neighbouring villages, along with security forces loyal to the regime, repeatedly threatened to destroy Alfan Alshamali village.  The Syrian Network for Human Rights has repeatedly raised warnings concerning reactions that we, as a small organisation and other humanitarian and relief organisations, cannot enter Syria and educate the residents about. We find this important as this will have a negative impact on the topics of co-existence and transitional justice.

In the context of an open war on the Syrian people and their towns and cities, along with squads travelling from one part to another – all planned strategically and headed  by Bashar Al Assad, the village of Alfan Alshamali was next on the regime’s list. On Sunday 02.09.2012, tanks and soldiers loyal to the regime entered the village, where they began to shell the village violently, leading to the complete destruction of a number of homes. Many residents were killed whilst they were in their homes, as a result of the intense shelling.

As the next stage of the attack, the village was stormed by Assad thugs and forces, in which they looted and destroyed and burnt shops. The continued, killing livestock, including cows. This was a planned act of the regime, and attempt to spread fear and terror amongst the people. A deterrent was constituted due to the inability of the Syrian Army to deploy soldiers in all areas. The regime resorts to such policies to destructively intimidate those opposing it.

An eyewitness informed us that members of the Assad army grouped a number of young men of the village in the village’s square, in which they were openly fired at by Assad forces – killed in cold blood.

30 residents of this small village were killed by Assad forces, consisting of one woman and a number of her children were killed whilst in their house.
With the help of the residents of the village, we were able to document who was killed on that day, in addition to at least 50 injured civilians. The Assad regime has also taken hold of a number of residents of the village and now they fall under the missing category.

Below are the numbers, names, Age, the place they were killed in, their job, social status, number of family members, date of their death.

We, The Syrian Network of Human rights, seek to protect and defend human rights. We explicitly condemn this horrific massacre which is openly classified as a crime against Human Rights, along with the remaining massacres against the Syrian people – all of which have been committed by Assad forces. We hold the Syrian regime, the Commander in Chief of the Armed forces full and direct responsibility of the massacre. In addition to this, we also hold Russia, Iran and Hizbullah direct responsibility of the killing as they continue to provide the Syrian regime with weapons and money. We call for the United Nations and Security Council to take immediate action and speed to protect the Syrian people and to live up to their responsibilities. We urge them to accelerate their steps in referring all those involved in this massacre to the International Criminal Court.
