In an Oral Intervention to the Human Rights Council: Human Rights Organizations Call for Justice in Syria

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Human Rights (EMHRN) and number of Syrian Human Rights Organizations presented an oral intervention on the ongoing atrocities in Syria to the UN Human Rights Council today, 17 September 2013.  The intervention came in the framework of the 24th session of the Council, which is currently convened in Geneva and which is scheduled to continue until 27 September 2013.

Force Against Civilians Escalates Once Again

Violence and systematic human rights abuses by the Syrian government regime’s forces continue to occur. DCHRS documented in the month of August, 2013 a total of 3377 victims killed by regime forces and their loyal militias. 73% were civilians totaling 2454 victims, with the other 932 remaining victims categorized as armed opposition forces and rebels, approximately 27% of the total victim.

During the first hours of Wednesday 21st August 2013, the regime committed another horrific crime against civilians leaving hundreds death and casualties in an area that had been already bombarded by the regime forces on daily basis, and that had been besieged for long months, which made it impossible to provide the simplest needs of life for hundreds of thousands of the residents.

The month of July reveals a significant raise in the number of civilian casualties

DCHRS documented 2585 victims including 283 children and 268 women during July, 2013

As violence and systematic human rights abuses continue by the Syrian government regime’s forces. DCHRS documented in the month of July, 2013 a total of 2585 victims who were killed by regime’s forces and their loyal militias. 70% of them were civilians reaching a total of 1798 victims; however the other 787 remaining victims were armed opposition forces and rebels accumulating a rate of 30% approximately.

Chemical Massacre in Ghouta

This report covers the days from August 21, 2013 to September 1, 2013. DCHRS was able to document 678 victims who were killed by chemical weapons. However, DCHRS is certain that the number of victims exceeded 1,600 as a result of the large area that was affected and the lack of medical equipment, which in turn caused many people to die from suffocation.

DCHRS observes the humanitarian disaster in Tal Shihab

Damascus – 24/07/2013 – The Damascus Centre for Human Rights Studies monitored the humanitarian situation of- five thousands displaced Syrians from the city of Nawa. The city of Nawa was heavily bombarded by the regime forces killing and wounding many citizens, destroying a large number of buildings and infrastructure, and forcing the rest of the residents to flee and seek refuge at the city of Tal Shihab.
