In addition to the numerous reports which are prepared by this network on a daily basis for more than one year, which included snapshots of the destruction in the Syrian districts. Accurate proof can be provided for the following statistics up to 31st August, 2012.

Over a period of 18 months, the Syrian army’s forces have used heavy weaponry to bombard the Syrian civilian’s homes. Heavy artillery, tanks, Shilka shells and heavy machine guns were used in the beginning, following this, for approximately 8 months, military aircraft were introduced to fighting force and were used heavily, and they mainly consisted of helicopters. However, for approximately 3 months military warplanes have been used daily in a systemic manner, in addition to the use of explosive barrels which weighed about half a ton each for around 2 months.

In total, this resulted in the destruction of two million and nine hundred and forty five thousand 2.945 buildings, such as residential homes, schools, mosques, churches and hospitals

Approx 20% of them were completely destroyed, this is equivalent to 589 000 buildings.

25% of them which are considered to be largely affected, this is equivalent to 736 000 buildings.

However, the remaining 55% were insignificantly affected; examples of these minor effects are the penetration of bullets through the walls and broken doors and windows.

The distribution of this destruction according to the Syrian districts:

Homs: 800 000 buildings

Aleppo: 500 000 buildings

Idlib: 500 000 buildings

Rural Damascus: 425 000 buildings

Daraa: 350 000 buildings

Hama: 185 000 buildings

Der Al Zor: 135 000 buildings

The remaining the Syrian districts such as Lattakia, Banyas, Al Reqqa and Al Hasaka: approx 200 000 buildings

The landscape which underpins this destruction and its consequences is the increase in the numbers of refugees and displaced people inside the Syrian territory.

This widespread and systematic destruction resulted in a devastatingly large increase in the numbers of refugees and displaced Syrian citizens. The Syrian network of human rights estimated that the number of displaced people inside Syria is approx 3.5 million, and the number of refugees outside Syria is half a million. These numbers are expected to increase massively due to the extensive land and air bombardment by the Syrian army.

In this report, we did not take into consideration the enormous psychological and economic consequences reflected on the owners of these homes, especially if we knew that there are generations who can only afford one home due to the high cost of land and construction, in comparison to the low per capita income in Syria.

The estimated figure for the reconstruction of the destroyed buildings, excluding devices and equipment:

The Syrian network of human rights estimated, with the aid of specialist civil engineers, that the cost of reconstruction of the buildings which have been completely or partially destroyed is approx 40 million dollars, and the period it would take to achieve this is no less than 5 years.

The Syrian network for human rights would like to add that the Syrian regime and the commander in chief of the army and armed forces, Basher Al Assad, carry the legal responsibility for all the acts of destruction and vandalism in Syria. The international community are also morally and legally responsible for the failure to find a solution to protect the lives of the Syrian citizens and their homes.

Syrian Network for Human Rights – London
Website: www.syrianhr.org
Email: press@syrianhr.org
Skype: Syrianhr

A report on the destruction of homes and buildings in the various Syrian districts, in accordance to a preliminary study carried out by the Syrian network for human rights and a comprehensive survey which was carried out in all the different areas in Syria.
