{"id":362,"date":"2011-09-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=362","title":{"rendered":"New evidence of Syria brutality emerges as woman\u2019s mutilated body is found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>23<br \/>\nSeptember 2011<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Fresh<br \/>\nevidence of the extreme brutality being meted out to Syrian protesters and<br \/>\ntheir families has been revealed today by Amnesty International.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>The<br \/>\nmutilated body of 18-year-old Zainab al-Hosni of Homs,<br \/>\nthe first woman known to have died in custody during Syria&rsquo;s recent unrest, was<br \/>\ndiscovered by her family in horrific circumstances on 13 September.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>The family<br \/>\nwas visiting a morgue to identify the body of Zainab&rsquo;s activist brother<br \/>\nMohammad, who was also arrested and apparently tortured and killed in detention.<br \/>\nZainab had been decapitated, her arms cut off, and skin removed.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&ldquo;If it is<br \/>\nconfirmed that Zainab was in custody when she died, this would be one of the<br \/>\nmost disturbing cases of a death in detention we have seen so far,&rdquo; said Philip<br \/>\nLuther, Amnesty International&rsquo;s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North<br \/>\nAfrica.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&ldquo;We have<br \/>\ndocumented other cases of protesters whose bodies were returned to their<br \/>\nfamilies in a mutilated state during recent months, but this is particularly<br \/>\nshocking.&rdquo;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>The<br \/>\nkillings of Zainab and Mohammad bring Amnesty International&rsquo;s records of<br \/>\nreported deaths in custody to 103 cases since mass protests in Syria began in<br \/>\nMarch this year.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Amnesty<br \/>\nInternational has recorded 15 new death in custody cases since its report <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/library\/info\/MDE24\/035\/2011\/en\">Deadly<br \/>\ndetention: Deaths in custody amid popular protest in Syria<\/a><\/em>, published<br \/>\non 31 August. The bodies have borne signs of beating, shooting and stabbing.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Zainab<br \/>\nal-Hosni was abducted by plain-clothes individuals believed to be members of<br \/>\nthe security forces on 27 July, apparently to pressure her activist brother<br \/>\nMohammad Deeb al-Hosni to turn himself in.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Mohammad<br \/>\nDeeb al-Hosni, 27, had been organizing protests in Homs since demonstrations began. After<br \/>\nZainab&rsquo;s arrest in July, he was apparently told on the phone by her captors<br \/>\nthat she would only be released if he stopped his anti-regime activities.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>He was<br \/>\neventually arrested on 10 September and held at the Political Security branch<br \/>\nin Homs.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Their<br \/>\nmother was summoned by security forces to pick up Mohammad&rsquo;s dead body from a<br \/>\nmilitary hospital only three days later, on 13 September. The body showed signs<br \/>\nof torture including bruising on the back and cigarette burns on the body. He<br \/>\nhad been shot in the right arm, right leg, and three times in the chest.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>By chance,<br \/>\ntheir mother discovered Zainab&rsquo;s mutilated body at the same military hospital.<br \/>\nHowever, the family were not permitted to take Zainab&rsquo;s body home until 17<br \/>\nSeptember.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Their<br \/>\nmother was said to have been made to sign a document saying that Zainab and<br \/>\nMohammad had been kidnapped and killed by an armed gang.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&ldquo;There are<br \/>\nno signs of torture and murder abating in Syria,&rdquo; said Philip Luther.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&ldquo;The<br \/>\nmounting toll of reports of people dying behind bars provides yet more evidence<br \/>\nof crimes against humanity and should spur the UN Security Council into<br \/>\nreferring the situation in Syria<br \/>\nto the International Criminal Court.&rdquo;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Amnesty<br \/>\nInternational has compiled the names of more than 2,200 people reported to have<br \/>\ndied since pro-reform protests began.
