{"id":357,"date":"2011-09-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=357","title":{"rendered":"DETAINED SYRIAN WRITER AT RISK OF TORTURE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nURGENT ACTION\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nKurdish writer and pro-reform activist, Hussein &lsquo;Essou, aged<br \/>\n59, has been held incommunicado since his arrest in al-Hasakah, north-eastern<br \/>\nSyria, on 3 September 2011. He suffers from a heart condition and may not be<br \/>\nreceiving the regular medication he requires. He is at risk of torture and<br \/>\nother ill-treatment.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nA person who said he was a member of Air Force Intelligence<br \/>\ntelephoned Hussein &lsquo;Essou in the early evening of 2 September, telling him they<br \/>\nwere waiting for him at his home and requesting him to return there<br \/>\nimmediately. He said he was busy and waited until 1am to go home after spending<br \/>\nthe evening with friends. He was arrested at around 2am on 3 September by<br \/>\nsecurity forces believed to be members of Air Force Intelligence.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWhen friends asked for him at the Air Force Intelligence<br \/>\nbranch in al-Hasakah, officers accepted the medication his friends had brought<br \/>\nfor him but did not permit them to see him. A contact has told Amnesty<br \/>\nInternational that he has since been moved to the Air Force Intelligence branch<br \/>\nin Damascus but Amnesty International has been unable to confirm this and his<br \/>\ncurrent whereabouts are therefore uncertain. Amnesty International is<br \/>\nparticularly concerned about his well-being as it is unclear whether he is<br \/>\nreceiving his regular medication, which he requires for treatment of a heart<br \/>\ncondition.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nHussein &lsquo;Essou is a prominent writer and pro-reform<br \/>\nactivist. He has publicly declared his support for the popular protests and<br \/>\nattended demonstrations in al-Hasakah and provided information to international<br \/>\nmedia outlets. Amnesty International has received numerous<br \/>\naccounts of detainees being tortured or otherwise ill-treated as well as<br \/>\nreports of at least 95 deaths in custody since April 2011, in many cases as an<br \/>\napparent result of such abuses.
