\nObservatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of
\nthe International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation
\nAgainst Torture (OMCT), requests your urgent intervention on the following
\nsituation in Syria<\/strong>.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Description
\nof the situation<\/span><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>The
\nObservatory has been informed by reliable sources about the release of Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui<\/span><\/strong>, President of the Syrian League for
\nHuman Rights<\/span>. According to the information received, on August 22, 2011,
\nMr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui was released without charge by the Syrian authorities,
\nafter eleven days in detention.\n<\/p>\n

\n \n<\/p>\n

\nThe Observatory recalls that Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui was arrested on August 11, 2011, by
\na patrol of the Air Intelligence, at the Havana Cafe in downtown Damascus,
\nwhere he was meeting with a journalist<\/a>[1].<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n \n<\/p>\n

\nThe Observatory welcomes the release of Mr. Abdel Karim
\nRihaoui and thanks all the persons, institutions and organisations who
\nintervened in his favour and recalls that despite this positive measure human
\nrights defenders and their families continued to be harassed by the authorities
\non a daily basis in retaliation for their human rights activities carried out
\nin the context of the national social protest movement and several remained in
\ndetention as to the date of publication of this appeal.\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nActions
\nrequested:<\/span><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPlease
\nwrite to the Syrian authorities, urging them to:<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\ni.Guarantee
\nin all circumstances the physical and psychological integrity of <\/span>Mr.
\nAbdel Karim Rihaoui;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nii.Put an
\nend to any kind of harassment against all human rights defenders in Syria as
\nwell as against their families;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\niii.Conform
\nwith the provisions of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by
\nthe General Assembly of the United Nations on December 9, 1998, especially:<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n– its
\nArticle 1, which states that “everyone has the right, individually and in
\nassociation with others, to promote and to strive for the protection and
\nrealization of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and
\ninternational levels”;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n– its
\nArticle 5 (a), which states that “for the purpose of promoting and protecting
\nhuman rights and fundamental freedoms, everyone has the right, individually and
\nin association with others, at the national and international levels to meet or
\nassemble peacefully”;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n– and its
\nArticle 12.2, which provides that “the State shall take all necessary measures
\nto ensure the protection by the competent authorities of everyone, individually
\nand in association with others, against any violence, threats, retaliation, de facto
\nor de jure adverse discrimination, pressure or any other arbitrary action as a
\nconsequence of his or her legitimate exercise of the rights referred to in the
\npresent Declaration”;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nin all circumstances respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in
\naccordance with international human rights standards and international
\ninstruments ratified by the Syrian Arab Republic.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
