{"id":325,"date":"2011-08-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=325","title":{"rendered":"Young Syrian activists held amid widespread repression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nAMNESTY INTERNATIONAL\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nPRESS RELEASE\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\n15 August 2011\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nAI Index: PRE01\/401\/2011\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\n<strong>Young Syrian activists held amid widespread repression<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nAt least three young human rights activists who helped to<br \/>\norganize peaceful protests in and near Damascus are being held incommunicado in<br \/>\nunknown locations after their recent arrest, while fears are growing for a<br \/>\nfourth who has gone missing.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nThe news of the activists&rsquo; plight comes amid reports that<br \/>\nsome 25 people have been killed since yesterday in the port city of Latakia,<br \/>\nwhere Syrian tanks and ships reportedly continue to shell residential areas in<br \/>\nan attempt to quell protests.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nAcross Syria, more than 1,700 people have been killed since<br \/>\nmass protests began in mid-March, according to a list of names compiled by<br \/>\nAmnesty International.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\n&ldquo;The Syrian authorities must immediately reveal the<br \/>\nwhereabouts of any activists arrested in connection with the ongoing pro-reform<br \/>\nprotests and give them access to their families and lawyers,&rdquo; said Philip<br \/>\nLuther, Deputy Director of Amnesty International&rsquo;s Middle East and North Africa<br \/>\nProgramme.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\n&ldquo;If they are being held solely for their involvement in<br \/>\npeaceful protests, the authorities have no basis to continue holding them, and<br \/>\nthey must be released immediately and unconditionally as they would be<br \/>\nprisoners of conscience. The Syrian authorities must also investigate reports<br \/>\nof torture and other ill-treatment in detention and bring those responsible to<br \/>\njustice.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nSources have told Amnesty International that two of the<br \/>\nactivists &ndash; Islam al-Dabbas and Majd al-Din Kholani, both of whom are students<br \/>\nfrom Daraya, south-west of Damascus &ndash; had been beaten severely following their<br \/>\narrest by Air Force Security on 22 July and 8 August, respectively.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nAccording to human rights activists, Air Force Security<br \/>\noversees arrests in Daraya. Along with the other Syrian intelligence services,<br \/>\nit regularly detains people suspected of opposing the government and holds them<br \/>\nincommunicado for lengthy periods in detention centres that are notorious for<br \/>\ntorture and other ill-treatment.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nWomen&rsquo;s rights activist Hanadi Zahlout was arrested at a<br \/>\ncaf&eacute; in Damascus on 4 August. Detainees recently released from the Political<br \/>\nSecurity branch in Damascus said they had seen her in detention there, and that<br \/>\nshe had made a confession after being forced to watch her friend being<br \/>\ntortured.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nDamascus-based activist and film producer Shadi Abu Fakher<br \/>\nwas last heard from on 23 July when he phoned a friend he was meeting that day<br \/>\nto say he was just two minutes away.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nFamily members of the detained activists have been too<br \/>\nafraid to ask authorities for details of their whereabouts, sources have told<br \/>\nAmnesty International, which fears they may have been subjected to enforced<br \/>\ndisappearance.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nAll four activists had helped to organize peaceful<br \/>\npro-reform demonstrations in and near the capital. Islam al-Dabbas in<br \/>\nparticular was well-known for presenting water bottles with flowers to the army<br \/>\nwhen they attempted to attack protesters in Daraya.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"MsoNormal\\\">\nSince the beginning of popular protests in mid-March, the<br \/>\nSyrian security forces have arrested thousands of people in cities across the<br \/>\ncountry.
