The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders,<br \/>\na joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and<br \/>\nthe World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), and the Euro-Mediterranean Human<br \/>\nRights Network (EMHRN) vehemently condemn the arrest and incommunicado detention<br \/>\nof prominent Syrian human rights defender Abdel Karim Rihaoui, amid ongoing<br \/>\nharsh and general repression in the country.<\/span><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>On August<br \/>\n11, 2011, Mr. <strong>Abdel Karim Rihaoui<\/strong>, President of the Syrian League for<br \/>\nHuman Rights, was arrested by a patrol of the Air Intelligence, at the Havana<br \/>\nCafe in downtown Damascus, where he was meeting with a journalist. His<br \/>\nwhereabouts have remained unknown since then.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>The<br \/>\nObservatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and the EMHRN firmly<br \/>\ncondemn the incommunicado detention of Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui, and strongly<br \/>\nfear that his arbitrary arrest merely aims at sanctioning his human rights<br \/>\nactivities, and in particular his mobilisation on cases of political prisoners.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&quot;This<br \/>\narrest provides further evidence of the continued repression of dissenting<br \/>\nvoices in Syria. We call upon the Syrian authorities to guarantee the physical<br \/>\nand psychological integrity of Mr. Rihaoui, to disclose his whereabouts and to<br \/>\nrelease him immediately and unconditionally&quot;, FIDH President Souhayr<br \/>\nBelhassen said today.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&quot;We<br \/>\nare all the more concerned that Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui&rsquo;s arrest takes place<br \/>\namid the current violent repression of peaceful protests in the country, in the<br \/>\nframework of which several human rights defenders remain detained today, in conditions<br \/>\nof detention that often do not respect their human dignity.
