\nSYRIA: <\/span><\/strong>Arrest and incommunicado detention of the President of the Syrian League for Human Rights<\/a> \n<\/p>\n

\nParis-Geneva,
\nAugust 12, 2011. The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders,
\na joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and
\nthe World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), and the Euro-Mediterranean Human
\nRights Network (EMHRN) vehemently condemn the arrest and incommunicado detention
\nof prominent Syrian human rights defender Abdel Karim Rihaoui, amid ongoing
\nharsh and general repression in the country.<\/span><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\nOn August
\n11, 2011, Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui<\/strong>, President of the Syrian League for
\nHuman Rights, was arrested by a patrol of the Air Intelligence, at the Havana
\nCafe in downtown Damascus, where he was meeting with a journalist. His
\nwhereabouts have remained unknown since then.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe
\nObservatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and the EMHRN firmly
\ncondemn the incommunicado detention of Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui, and strongly
\nfear that his arbitrary arrest merely aims at sanctioning his human rights
\nactivities, and in particular his mobilisation on cases of political prisoners.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n"This
\narrest provides further evidence of the continued repression of dissenting
\nvoices in Syria. We call upon the Syrian authorities to guarantee the physical
\nand psychological integrity of Mr. Rihaoui, to disclose his whereabouts and to
\nrelease him immediately and unconditionally", FIDH President Souhayr
\nBelhassen said today.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n"We
\nare all the more concerned that Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui’s arrest takes place
\namid the current violent repression of peaceful protests in the country, in the
\nframework of which several human rights defenders remain detained today, in conditions
\nof detention that often do not respect their human dignity. Accordingly, we
\ncall upon the Syrian authorities to stop the systematic repression of all human
\nrights defenders in the country”, added Eric Sottas, OMCT Secretary General.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKamel
\nJendoubi, EMHRN President, said “we denounce the use of arbitrary detention and
\nenforced disappearance of human rights defenders and peaceful activists, which
\nappears to be part of a deliberate strategy aimed at silencing critics on gross
\nhuman rights abuses”. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe
\nObservatory and the EMHRN urge the Syrian authorities to guarantee in all
\ncircumstances the physical and psychological integrity of people detained and
\nto release Mr. Abdel Karim Rihaoui immediately and unconditionally, in
\nconformity with the provisions of the United Nations Declaration on Human
\nRights Defenders.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
