{"id":321,"date":"2011-08-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=321","title":{"rendered":"UN urged to issue resolution on Syria bloodshed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<strong><span>UN urged to issue resolution on Syria bloodshed<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>World<br \/>\nleaders must take immediate concrete action to respond to the crisis in Syria,<br \/>\nAmnesty International said today, amid reports that the death toll since mass<br \/>\nprotests began in March had risen to more than 1,600 people.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>The call<br \/>\ncame ahead of a key UN Security Council debate set for Wednesday at which<br \/>\nSecretary-General Ban Ki-moon is to deliver a report on Syria.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Some 53<br \/>\npeople are said to have been killed across Syria since Saturday, bringing the<br \/>\ntotal number of reported fatalities to over 1,600 people. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>At least<br \/>\nfive civilians were reportedly killed in the central town of Hama on Tuesday.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&ldquo;Any honest<br \/>\nexamination of the facts of the horrific situation in Syria should be more than<br \/>\nsufficient to <span>&nbsp;<\/span>persuade the Security<br \/>\nCouncil to come up with a legally-binding resolution, not just a meek statement.<br \/>\n<span>&nbsp;<\/span>A mere diplomatic appeal to the Syrian<br \/>\nauthorities to end the ongoing violence against civilians will fall far short<br \/>\nof what the situation demands,&rdquo; said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International&rsquo;s<br \/>\nDirector for Middle East and North Africa.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>&ldquo;The UN<br \/>\nmust also impose a complete arms embargo on Syria as well as freezing the overseas<br \/>\nassets of President Assad and his senior associates,&rdquo; <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>The Syrian<br \/>\ngovernment is facing increasing pressure to end its&nbsp;crackdown on&nbsp;anti-government<br \/>\nprotesters, amid widespread international condemnation. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Turkey&#8217;s<br \/>\nforeign&nbsp;minister met President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday in a<br \/>\nreported attempt to persuade the Syrian leader to end the violence against<br \/>\ncivilians.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>In a rare<br \/>\nmove, Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s King Abdullah summarily recalled his country&rsquo;s ambassador<br \/>\nfrom Damascus on Sunday and condemned Syria&rsquo;s brutal crackdown on protests,<br \/>\ncalling for an end to the army&rsquo;s &ldquo;killing machine&rdquo;. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span>Most Arab<br \/>\ncountries have also condemned the violence, leaving Syria increasingly<br \/>\nisolated.
