\nSyria: Arrest and detention of three protest leaders \n22 July 2011\n<\/p>\n \nSince the beginning of the protests in Syria, thousands of \nArrested on 12 May 2011, Messrs Bashar, Mohamed and Ghassan \nAll three were arrested at their homes in Banias by agents \nIt is clear that Messrs Bashar, Mohamed and Ghassan Al \nAlkarama is seriously concerned about the repression by \nSyria: Arrest and detention of three protest leaders \nSince the beginning of the protests in Syria, thousands of
\nMessrs Al Sahyoni<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n
\narbitrary arrests, disappearances and human rights abuses have been, and
\ncontinue to be, committed by the authorities with total impunity. Human rights
\nactivists and campaigners have in particular been targeted by the security
\nforces.\n<\/p>\n
\nAl Sahyoni played an important role in the peaceful demonstrations that have
\ntaken place in Syria last March, as they were in charge of coordinating
\nprotests locally.\n<\/p>\n
\nof the Military Intelligence Services, some of whom were dressed as civilians,
\nthe other in uniforms. They were immediately taken to an unknown destination
\nand there has been no news of them since. Their family has not been able to
\nobtain information about them since their arrests as the authorities refuse to
\nprovide any information on their well being or whereabouts. Alkarama is
\ntherefore concerned for their physical and mental integrity as they are at high
\nrisk of torture and ill-treatment during their disappearance.\n<\/p>\n
\nSahyoni have been arrested because of their active participation in, and
\norganisation of, peaceful demonstrations. We believe this is an attempt by the
\nauthorities to prevent them expressing their opinions.\n<\/p>\n
\nSyrian authorities of peaceful demonstrators for their exercising their right
\nto freedom of opinion and expression, and fears that these arrests constitute a
\npart of a policy aimed at shutting down any source of opposition in the
\ncountry. We call on the Syrian government to remedy to this situation by
\nimmediately releasing Messrs Bashar, Mohamed and Ghassan Al Sahyoni and to
\nensure that their right to freedom of expression and opinion is respected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
