He usually lives with his family in Al Miridyan region, Aleppo.<br \/>\nHe is a member at the Arab Writers&#8217; Union as well as the Federation of Arab<br \/>\nJournalists. Mr Al Tahhan holds a PhD in philosophy and is the author of many<br \/>\nbooks such as Makers of civilization.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOn 19 July 2011, Mr Al Tahhan was arrested at his home by<br \/>\ntwo agents of the Aleppo Air Intelligence Branch who were wearing civilian<br \/>\nclothes. During his arrest, these agents didn&#8217;t present any judicial warrant<br \/>\nnor did they give a reason for his arrest. They then took Mr Al Tahhan to an<br \/>\nunknown location. Mr Al Tahan&#8217;s fate or whereabouts remains unknown as the<br \/>\nAleppo Air Intelligence Branch refused to provide any information.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOn 22 July 2011, Alkrama submitted an urgent appeal<br \/>\nregarding Mr Al Tahhan&#8217;s case to the Special Rapporteur on Torture and also informed<br \/>\nthe Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, the Special<br \/>\nRapporteur on extrajudicial executions and the Special Rapporteur on the<br \/>\npromotion and the protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIt is believed that Mr Al Tahhan&#8217;s arrest is due to his<br \/>\npeaceful activities in the current context of peaceful demonstrations in Syria.<br \/>\nA number of other human rights defenders and political activists have also been<br \/>\nrearrested in the same day as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.alkarama.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=720:syria-leading-democratic-peoples-party-member-arrested&amp;catid=36:communiqu&amp;Itemid=198\">Mr<br \/>\nGeorge Sabra.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlkarama is very concerned about his health and fears for<br \/>\nhis life, especially that Mr Al Tahhan is suffering from Prostate cancer, high<br \/>\nblood pressure and is not being given his medication. Moreover, we are aware of<br \/>\nthe large number of deaths following torture which have occurred in Syria in<br \/>\nrecent months.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWe are also seriously concerned about the repression of<br \/>\npeaceful demonstrators and other activists deprived of all fundamentals<br \/>\nsafeguards.
