Reports suggest he has been tortured or otherwise ill-treated<br \/>\nby Syrian security forces.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n&lsquo;Awad &lsquo;Abbas was arrested at his home in al-Dumayr,<br \/>\nnorth-east of the capital Damascus, during a raid by a reportedly large number<br \/>\nof armed members of Syrian Air Force Security. The security forces were<br \/>\nsearching for his brother Hussein Jassim &lsquo;Abbas, who had gone into hiding due<br \/>\nto fears of being arrested because of his peaceful activities during the<br \/>\ncurrent protests calling for political reform. &lsquo;Awad &lsquo;Abbas also attended<br \/>\npro-reform protests, and Amnesty International believes his arrest and<br \/>\nsubsequent detention may be in connection with this.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nA former detainee at the Air Force Security branch in<br \/>\nHarasta, near Damascus, has said that &lsquo;Awad &lsquo;Abbas was held in the cell next to<br \/>\nhis and told him that he was taken there following his arrest. Later his<br \/>\nrelatives were informed by the security forces that, although &lsquo;Awad &lsquo;Abbas had<br \/>\nnot been charged, he would not be released until his brother Hussein &lsquo;Abbas<br \/>\nturned himself in. They were also told that &lsquo;Awad &lsquo;Abbas had been moved from<br \/>\nthe Air Force Security branch in Harasta to the State Security branch on<br \/>\nBaghdad Street in Damascus, where he is believed to be still held.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International is particularly concerned about &lsquo;Awad<br \/>\n&lsquo;Abbas&rsquo; safety after the former detainee at the Air Force Security branch in<br \/>\nHarasta reported that &lsquo;Awad &lsquo;Abbas told him that he had been tortured during<br \/>\nhis detention. They have a history of arbitrarily arresting and detaining<br \/>\npeople on suspicion of dissent and are widely reported to practise torture and<br \/>\nother ill-treatment with impunity.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSyrian security forces have been carrying out widespread<br \/>\narrests in response to mass protests calling for political reform and<br \/>\nincreasingly for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, which began in<br \/>\nmid-March. The arrests have targeted people perceived to have organized or<br \/>\nopenly supported those protests, whether orally in public gatherings, in the<br \/>\nmedia, on the internet or elsewhere. They include political and human rights<br \/>\nactivists, mosque imams and journalists. The wave of arrests has forced a<br \/>\nnumber of political and human rights activists into hiding.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International has previously documented cases of Syrian<br \/>\nsecurity forces arresting persons solely based on their family relations with<br \/>\npeople perceived as activists by the Syrian government.
