{"id":291,"date":"2011-06-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=291","title":{"rendered":"HUNDREDS OF PRISONERS RELEASED IN SYRIA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nURGENT ACTION\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<strong>HUNDREDS OF PRISONERS RELEASED IN SYRIA<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nHundreds of people arrested during protests in Syria have<br \/>\nnow been released, some individually in previous months and some following a<br \/>\n&ldquo;general amnesty&rdquo; on 31 May 2011. Nonetheless, arrests continue on a daily<br \/>\nbasis and hundreds of people remain in incommunicado detention, where they are<br \/>\nat risk of torture and other ill-treatment.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThose freed before the &ldquo;general amnesty&rdquo; include Mohammed<br \/>\nHasan al-Labwani, Hassan &lsquo;Abd al-&lsquo;Adhim, aged 79, and &lsquo;Omar Qashaash, aged 85,<br \/>\nAhmed Haji Khalaf, Manhal Mahmoud Barish and his two brothers Ayham and Shadi<br \/>\nBarish, who were all released on different dates between 5 and 26 May. In<br \/>\naddition, Dorothy Parvaz was deported to Iran by the Syrian authorities<br \/>\nfollowing her arrest at Damascus airport on 29 April and released from the<br \/>\ncustody of the Iranian authorities on 18 May.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International received reports that Mohammed Hasan<br \/>\nal-Labwani and others were tortured or otherwise ill-treated while in<br \/>\ndetention. Dorothy Parvaz&rsquo;s testimony to Al Jazeera about her detention<br \/>\ndescribes what sounded like other detainees being subjected to torture during<br \/>\ninterrogation: <a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/indepth\/opinion\/2011\/05\/2011518184325620380.html\">http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/indepth\/opinion\/2011\/05\/2011518184325620380.html<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International is not aware whether Firas Fayyad or<br \/>\n&lsquo;Abdullah Khalil have been released.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmong the detainees who, as far as Amnesty International is<br \/>\naware, remain detained incommunicado, is political activist Wa&rsquo;el Hammada, who<br \/>\nappears to be held by the Air Force Security in Damascus. His brother &lsquo;Abd<br \/>\nal-Rahman Hammada was transferred yesterday to Damascus Central Prison (also<br \/>\nknown as &lsquo;Adra prison) and is no longer held incommunicado. Please see UA<br \/>\n149\/11 Index: MDE 24\/023\/2011 Syria and follow-up.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nPresident Bashar al-Assad announced on 31 May a &ldquo;general<br \/>\namnesty&rdquo; for those convicted and imprisoned for certain offences committed<br \/>\nbefore that date. As a result several hundred prisoners, including detainees<br \/>\nwhom the authorities described as members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood and<br \/>\nother &ldquo;politically affiliated&rdquo; prisoners, were released. Those amnestied<br \/>\nincluded about nine individuals imprisoned in previous years who Amnesty<br \/>\nInternational had determined were prisoners of conscience.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International has called on Syria&rsquo;s President to<br \/>\nfully implement the &ldquo;general amnesty&rdquo; by immediately freeing all prisoners of<br \/>\nconscience, including those detained because of their participation in peaceful<br \/>\nprotests.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nMany thanks to all who sent appeals!
