Following their<br \/>\nrelease, Prime Minister Mikati declared on Arab television channel Al-Arabiya<br \/>\nthat his government will &quot;look at the issue of Syrian refugees &#8230; from a<br \/>\npurely humanitarian angle, away from politics&quot;.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlkarama had raised its concerns about the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.alkarama.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=751:lebanon-syrian-seeking-refuge-in-lebanon-risk-refoulement-&amp;catid=26:communiqu&amp;Itemid=132\">situation<br \/>\nof Syrian refugees arrested and illegally detained by the Lebanese security<br \/>\nforces on 30 May 2011<\/a>.&nbsp;Concerns raised with the United Nations<br \/>\nincluded the risk that those found guilty would be forcibly returned to Syria,<br \/>\nwhere they might have been at risk of torture. &nbsp;This would have been in<br \/>\nviolation of Lebanon&#8217;s international obligations relating to refugee<br \/>\nprotection.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlkarama commends the Lebanese authorities for this action,<br \/>\nwhich the local population and international community had called for. In<br \/>\nreleasing Syrian refugees, Lebanon has respected its international obligations<br \/>\nregarding the rights of refugees and ban on refoulement laid out in<br \/>\ninternational customary law and the Convention against Torture ratified by<br \/>\nLebanon.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWe hope that the Lebanese authorities will continue this<br \/>\npositive trend, and we now call on the recently-named Government to allow for<br \/>\nthe visit of the Human Rights Council-mandate Fact-Finding Mission on Syria to<br \/>\nthe country.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlkarama will continue to monitor the situation of the<br \/>\nSyrian refugee population in Lebanon and ensure their rights as refugees,<br \/>\nestablished in various international conventions, are fully respected.
