{"id":277,"date":"2011-06-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=277","title":{"rendered":"UN urged to act following deadly weekend in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nPRESS RELEASE\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n6 June 2011\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<strong>UN urged to act following deadly weekend in Syria<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International has condemned Syrian authorities&rsquo;<br \/>\nbrutal treatment of protesters following one of the bloodiest weekends in<br \/>\nmonths of pro-reform demonstrations, with more than 120 people reportedly shot<br \/>\ndead.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe call came ahead of a key UN Security Council vote<br \/>\nexpected this week on the violent repression in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n&quot;As the death toll in Syria reaches staggering new<br \/>\nheights, it is imperative that the UN Security Council &#8211; which has so far been<br \/>\nsilent on this issue &#8211; votes to condemn the killings,&quot; said Philip Luther,<br \/>\nAmnesty International&rsquo;s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n&quot;It must also take decisive action and refer the<br \/>\nsituation in Syria to the International Criminal Court. Those responsible for<br \/>\nthe brutal crackdown of pro-reform protesters must no longer be allowed to get<br \/>\naway with murder,&quot; he added.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAmnesty International has the names of 54 people reported to<br \/>\nhave been shot dead by the security forces on Saturday and Sunday.
