{"id":272,"date":"2011-05-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=272","title":{"rendered":"The UN Security Council must take a stronger stand on Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nMay 25, 2011\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<a href=\"File\/Statements\/2011\/05-25-2011TheUNSecurityCouncilMustTakeAStrongerStandOnSyria.pdf\">Open Letter from Arab Civil Society Organizations to United<br \/>\nNations Security Council Members <\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<a href=\"File\/Statements\/2011\/05-25-2011TheUNSecurityCouncilMustTakeAStrongerStandOnSyria.pdf\"><strong>The UN Security Council must take a stronger stand on<br \/>\nSyria <\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nDear Ambassador\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAs leaders of 224 civil society organizations from 18<br \/>\ncountries across the Arab world, we call on members of United Nations Security<br \/>\nCouncil to support a resolution calling for the immediate end to the use of<br \/>\nlethal force against protestors in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOver 1,000 civilians have been killed and 10,000 arrested in<br \/>\n16 Syrian cities. The lack of running water and electricity in towns such as<br \/>\nDerra and Homs has left innocent civilians, including many women and children,<br \/>\nwithout essential basic services. As the situation deteriorates further, the<br \/>\ncommunications blackout imposed since the 22nd of April prevents any objective<br \/>\nassessment of humanitarian needs.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWe believe that the silence of the UN Security Council sends<br \/>\nthe wrong message and fails to deter further violence and human rights abuses<br \/>\nby the Syrian authorities. A resolution by the UN Security Council is needed to<br \/>\nmake clear that the current crackdown is unacceptable and in no way condoned by<br \/>\nthe community of nations.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWe regret that, to date, the Security Council has been<br \/>\nunable to reach agreement on a resolution to support the thousands of Syrian<br \/>\ncivilians in desperate need of protection. We urge you to use your leadership<br \/>\nwithin the Council to ensure the UN lives up to its mandate by adopting a<br \/>\nresolution that:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>&#8211;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><\/span>Condemns the <strong>excessive<br \/>\nuse of lethal force <\/strong>against peaceful protestors in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>&#8211;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><\/span>Demands a <strong>complete end<br \/>\nto violence <\/strong>and attacks against and abuses of civilians.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>&#8211;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><\/span>Demands the Syrian<br \/>\nauthorities <strong>provide immediate access and guarantees for the provision of<br \/>\nhumanitarian assistance<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>&#8211;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><\/span>Demands the Syrian<br \/>\nauthorities abide by International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law, including<br \/>\n<strong>respect for freedom of association and expression <\/strong>and immediately lift<br \/>\nthe communications blackout.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>&#8211;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><\/span><strong>Supports all measures<br \/>\nauthorized by the UN Human Rights Council <\/strong>including an international<br \/>\ninvestigative mission (A\/HRC\/RES\/S-16\/1) for Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe people of Syria have already waited too long for a<br \/>\nresponse from the Council.
