\nEU Syria sanctions must prompt tougher UN action <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe EU has imposed an asset freeze and travel ban on
\nPresident al-Assad\n<\/p>\n

\nNew European Union sanctions on President Bashar al-Assad of
\nSyria should prompt the UN and Arab League to take tougher action against Syria
\nover its violent crackdown against protesters, Amnesty International said
\ntoday.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe European Union today imposed fresh sanctions on Syria,
\nincluding personal asset freezes and travel bans on President al-Assad and
\nother senior government figures.  <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We welcome the measures that the EU and the US government
\nhave now taken against President al-Assad and those around him, but the danger
\nis that this will prove to be too little too late,” said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty
\nInternational’s Director for the Middle East and North Africa.\n<\/p>\n

\n“The UN Security Council must now take more determined
\naction on Syria and follow the precedent it set when Colonel al-Gaddafi’s
\ngovernment began attacking its own people in Libya.”\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is precisely what the Syrian government has been doing
\nfor weeks and it is high time that the Security Council also referred Syria to
\nthe Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.”\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Security Council’s failure to take similar action is
\nsending entirely the wrong signal to the government in Damascus. Syria’s
\nleaders must be told, and be told firmly, that they will not escape
\naccountability and justice for the crimes that are now being committed under
\ntheir authority in Syria.”\n<\/p>\n

\nAmnesty International has the names of more then 720 people
\nkilled by the Syrian security forces during the past two months of unrest and
\ndemonstrations sparked by protests throughout the region. These included 60
\npeople killed on Friday 20 May and Saturday 21 May.\n<\/p>\n

\nThousands more are believed to be detained incommunicado and
\nto be at risk of torture, which has been used systematically by the Syrian
\ngovernment over many years.  <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>“The Arab League must
\nalso step up and take firm action on Syria,” said Malcolm Smart.  <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n \n<\/p>\n

\n“The UN and the Arab League need to take action to impose a
\ncomprehensive arms embargo on Syria, and global asset freezes on President
\nAssad and those around him.”\n<\/p>\n
