{"id":255,"date":"2011-05-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=255","title":{"rendered":"Mass grave uncovered in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nJoint press release\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<a href=\"File\/Statements\/2011\/05-17-2011MassGraveUncoveredInSyria.pdf\"><strong>Mass grave uncovered in Syria<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAuthorities must stop further killings of civilians and<br \/>\nrespect the right of families to know the fate of their relatives\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the<br \/>\nDamascus Center for Human Rights<span>&nbsp; <\/span>(DCHRS)<br \/>\nhave been informed by cross-checked sources that a mass grave containing the<br \/>\nremains of at least 13 bodies was uncovered on May 16 morning near Daraa in area<br \/>\ncalled Talit Mohammed Assarie.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAccording to witnesses, the mass grave contains the remains<br \/>\nof 13 people including women and children, 8 of them have been identified and<br \/>\nare members of the Abazied and al-Mahmaed families.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Abdulrazaq Abdulaziz Abazied ( Abu Samer )<br \/>\nand his four sons<span>&nbsp; <\/span>as well as<span>&nbsp; <\/span>three persons from the al-Mahmaed family<br \/>\nlived together in a house, which was targeted by the army during the attack on<br \/>\nDaraa at the beginning of May, according to nearby residents.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIt is not clear when those people died, but Daraa residents<br \/>\nsay dozens of civilians were killed during the military assault on the city&#8217;s<br \/>\nold quarter.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAuthorities cordoned off the area on the outskirts of Daraa<br \/>\nsoon after the bodies were found by villagers digging in farmland. The villagers<br \/>\nhave been prevented from identifying the bodies. The security forces which took<br \/>\ncontrol over the area also allegedly confiscated their mobile phones.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nFIDH and DCHRS stress that on April 24, tank-backed Syrian<br \/>\nSecurity forces took siege over the city of Daraa for more than ten days,<br \/>\npreventing residents from leaving their homes and resulting in very difficult<br \/>\nhumanitarian conditions. Security forces cut electricity, landlines, and mobile<br \/>\ncoverage before undertaking its attack on the city; furthermore, they took out<br \/>\nwater reservoirs on the tops of building by firing live bullets at them. Lack<br \/>\nof food, water, and children&rsquo;s milk remain serious concerns for residents in<br \/>\nDaraa.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlready during the siege of Daraa, an eyewitness had told<br \/>\nDCHRS that army and security officers were preventing residents from leaving<br \/>\ntheir homes or even from removing dead bodies from the streets. &ldquo;Dead bodies<br \/>\nremain in the streets for more than 24 hours and then disappear.&rdquo;, as recalled<br \/>\nby our organisation in a statement dated May 4, 2011<br \/>\n(http:\/\/www.fidh.org\/Daraa-Ten-days-of-massacres).\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nFIDH and DCHRS condemn the ongoing harsh repression by the<br \/>\nSyrian authorities against civilians. Our organisations urge the Syrian<br \/>\nauthorities to stop further killings of civilians; to uncover mass graves and<br \/>\nrespect the right of families to know the fate of their relatives including by<br \/>\nrestituting the bodies. International crimes &ndash; that fall under the jurisdiction<br \/>\nof the International Criminal Court (ICC) &#8211; are being perpetrated by the Syrian<br \/>\nauthorities.
