She is currently being<br \/>\ndetained by the Syrian authorities and sources confirm that she is being &quot;well-treated&quot;.<br \/>\nAlkarama had sent an urgent appeal on 3 May 2011 to the UN Working Group on<br \/>\nEnforced and Involuntary Disappearance, in an effort to exert pressure on the<br \/>\nSyrian government for her release, however sources later confirmed on 4 May<br \/>\n2011 that Dorothy Parvaz was in Syrian custody.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nNearly 7000 people on Facebook have joined the group Free<br \/>\nDorothy Parvaz &#8211; a campaign which will undoubtedly continue to grow as long as<br \/>\nshe remains in detention.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nParvaz spent her teenage years in North Vancouver and attended<br \/>\nthe University of British Columbia. She then studied journalism in Arizona and<br \/>\nlater worked for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper before taking the job<br \/>\nwith Al-Jazeera.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWorsening human rights situation\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe human rights situation in Syria has seriously degraded<br \/>\nin recent weeks, as hundreds of protestors have been killed and thousands<br \/>\narrested since demonstrations began in mid-March 2011. Sources from inside<br \/>\nSyria indicate that human rights defenders are being persecuted, while local<br \/>\nand international journalists have been arrested and are being held<br \/>\nincommunicado.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nKhaled Sid Mohand, a French-Algerian journalist, who<br \/>\nrecently travelled to Syria to report on events there, was arrested and<br \/>\ndetained for 24 days, before being released yesterday.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe Assad regime continues to suppress the international<br \/>\nmedia in an attempt to cover up the growing number of human rights violations<br \/>\ncommitted by the Syrian authorities. Syrian citizens are calling for democratic<br \/>\nreforms in a country, which only last week lifted its longstanding 1963<br \/>\nEmergency Law &#8211; a law that previously imposed a ban on public gatherings.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSince protests began on 15 March 2011, media outlets have<br \/>\nbeen prevented from covering the gross human rights violations being committed<br \/>\nby the Syrian security forces. The world&#8217;s media has depended on email reports<br \/>\nfrom Syrian activists and amateur footage being leaked via Youtube. The images<br \/>\nhave often been graphic and violent depictions of hysteria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nInternational condemnation\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe Syrian government has subsequently come under heavy<br \/>\ncondemnation from the international community, in recent weeks, over its<br \/>\ncontinued violent aggression against pro-democracy demonstrators.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOn 29 April 2011, the UN Human Rights Council issued<br \/>\nresolution S-16\/1 urging Syria &quot;to immediately put an end to all human<br \/>\nrights violations, protect its population, and respect fully all human rights<br \/>\nand fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and freedom of<br \/>\nassembly; further urges the authorities to allow access to the Internet and<br \/>\ntelecommunications networks and to lift censorship on reporting, including by<br \/>\nallowing appropriate access by foreign journalists.&quot;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlkarama will continue to closely monitor the human rights<br \/>\nsituation in Syria, and provide any relevant updates to the UN human rights<br \/>\nbodies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<a href=\"File\/Statements\/2011\/05-04-2011Al-JazeeraJournalistArrestedAtDamascusAirport.pdf\"><strong>Al-Jazeera journalist arrested at Damascus<br \/>\nairport<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAl Jazeera journalist, Dorothy Parvaz, who flew to Damascus<br \/>\nfrom Doha on 29 April 2011, has been arrested at Damascus airport after trying<br \/>\nto enter the country to report on the escalating events.
