{"id":234,"date":"2011-04-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=234","title":{"rendered":"Syria: 359 arrested for alleged participation in peaceful protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<a href=\"File\/Statements\/2011\/04-21-2011-359ArrestedForAllegedParticipationInPeacefulProtests.pdf\"><strong>Syria: 359 arrested for alleged participation in peaceful<br \/>\nprotests<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n21 April 2011\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<a href=\"File\/Statements\/2011\/ListOfArrestedProtesters.pdf\">Click here to download a list of the 359 arrested between 1<br \/>\n&#8211; 10 April 2011<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlkarama has submitted to the UN Human Rights Special<br \/>\nProcedures the names of 359 individuals arrested following their alleged<br \/>\nparticipation in protests in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSyrian human rights organizations have signaled that more<br \/>\nthan 800 individuals have been arrested since the authorities began cracking<br \/>\ndown on peaceful protests in mid-March 2011 &#8211; yet demonstrators continue to<br \/>\nhold demonstrations calling for democratic reforms in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOn 19 April 2011, the Syrian government approved a bill to<br \/>\nrescind Syria&#8217;s decades-old Emergency Law, which had, amongst its various<br \/>\nrepressive measures on civil liberties, also restricted public gatherings.<br \/>\nDespite the repeal of the highly criticised 1963 Emergency Law, violence<br \/>\nagainst peaceful protestors continues &#8211; more than 200 demonstrators have been<br \/>\nkilled over past ten days &#8211; begging questions as to President Assad&#8217;s regime&#8217;s<br \/>\nreal intentions in formally legalising the much sought after rights to freedom<br \/>\nof opinion, expression and assembly.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nFollowing to Alkarama&#8217;s communication to the UN on 30 March<br \/>\n2011 &#8211; regarding the arrest of 301 individuals &#8211; a further 359 arrests took<br \/>\nplace between 1 to 10 April 2011, although some have now been released. Alkarama<br \/>\nis still currently processing the names and cases of those arrested since 10<br \/>\nApril 2011, however fears this list will continue to grow in the coming weeks.<br \/>\nThose arrested and detained are at risk of torture and ill-treatment, which is<br \/>\nregularly practiced in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe growing list of arrestees only pales in comparison with<br \/>\nthe list of those killed in recent days.
