Ash-Shajra village lies close to the Golan Heights region next to Israeli Syrian border. Ash-Shajra refugee camp was established in August 2013 after the Syrian regime began a more intense and violent shelling against the Syrian cities, villages, and towns of Daraa province in addition to the closing of the border crossing between the Jordanian Syrian borders. The camp contains 500 tents that were secured by Gulf and other Arab countries.

The camp has a population of 3150 people; most of them are women and children and from Nawa, Udwan, Tsyl, Jasim, and Ash-Shaikh Saad village which was shelled with thermobaric missiles, Mortar shells, and barrel bombs. As a result many residents were forced to flee away seeking a safe haven.
These villages are currently being attacked by the Syrian regime especially after the liberation of Tal Jmoua’.

The residents of the camp are living under harsh conditions as they lack many services; the camp lacks bathrooms and was established next to a school in order for the residents to use its bathrooms. Additionally, the camp houses about 200 people from outside Daraa.

On 18 June, 2014 about 1:30 AM, a Syrian regime’s helicopter dropped two barrel bombs on the school yard, which is directly next to the tents.

The shelling killed 18 people including 15 children, among them were six brothers and their father. Furthermore, about sixty people were wounded; most of whom were children and women.

Eyewitnesses from inside the camp confirm that there are no armed groups or FSA soldiers inside the camp at all. Infact the camp houses Syrian civilians only whose homes were destroyed at the hands of the Syrian regime and they were forced to flee and refuge elsewhere.

A survivor told us that he is still searching for his mom between the body parts that were scattered between the trees and he couldn’t find anything.

Another survivor is still searching for the corpse of his wife that went out minutes before the shelling.

Body parts and blood smell were shattered all over the place. The people of the camp were overwhelmingly angry and in complete chaos. They believe that the Syrian regime forced them out of their houses and now the regime wants to finish them.

The camp residents urge the humanitarian organizations and Human Rights groups to move immediately to protect and aid them.

We, in Damascus Center for Human Rights, condemn this coward act that killed children, women, and civilians and demand an investigation to be conducted. Also, we demand the U.N.to maintain its responsibilities, protect these camps, provide assistance to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions inside the camp, cover the needs of its residents, and force the regime to stop targeting any residential areas especially refugee camps.

Names of the victims
1- Child Nirmeen Madin Ar-Rajeh, four-year-old.
2- Child Rou’a Madin Ar-Rajeh, 14-year-old.
3- Child Batoul Nasser At-Tyasna.
4- Child Rabie’a Nasser At-Tyasna.
5- Child Yasmin Madin Ar-Rajeh, seven-year-old.
6- Child Nada Walid At-Tyasna, 12-year-old.
7- Child Lina Walid At-Tyasna, 16-year-old.
8- Child Hanan Walid At-Tyasna, 17-year-old.
9- Child Mohammad Madin Ar-Rajeh, nine-year-old.
10- Child Saif Madin Ar-Rajeh, 12-year-old.
11- Child Khaldoun Walid At-Tyasna, four-year-old.
12- Child Mohammad Amin Walid At-Tyasna, eight-year-old.
13- Child Ibrahim Walid At-Tyasna.
14- Child Khaled Walid At-Tyasna.
15- Child Mohammad Rabea Nasser At-Tyasna.
16- Walid Mohammad At-Tyasna, 43-year-old.
17- Malek Madin Ar-Rajeh, 19-year-old.
18- Mohammad Ahmad Da’am.

Damascus Center for Human Rights

Issued on: 26-06-2014

DCHRS Activist took the following images as part of their documentation process for Ash-Shajra refugees camp

Victims of Ash-Shajra refugees camp massacre

For more information, please contact
Dr. Radwan Ziadeh, Executive director of the Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies.
Phone (571) 205-3590(571) 205-3590
Email : radwan.ziadeh@gmail.com

Mr. Mojahed Ghadban, Communication Officer.
Telephone (479) 799-8115(479) 799-8115
Email: info@dchrs.org

DCHRS is an independent, non-governmental organization, established in 2005, located in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Also DCHRS has been working on advocacy and lobbying in different human rights institutions in order to educate and acknowledge about the deteriorating human rights situation in Syria.. After the launch of the Syrian revolution, the center increased its activities through working, communicating, and coordinating with many members and activists. Thus the center began documenting daily violations committed by the Syrian regime forces that can be classified as crimes against humanities and war crimes. Such violations included: extrajudicial killings, massacres, arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, rape, torture in prisons. DCHRS opened local offices in Syria in order to document, collect, and observe human rights violations on the ground. DCHRS submitted those reports to many international and regional human rights organizations and communicated with the Report of the independent international commission of inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic on Syria.

Call

Send SMS

Add to Skype

You’ll need Skype CreditFree via Skype

Ash-Shajra refugee camp is located in Ash-Shajra village which is 35 Km to the north west of Daraa city.
