\nCasualties Report for January 2014<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n

As violence and systematic human rights abuses continue by the Syrian
\ngovernment regime’s forces. DCHRS documented in the month of January,
\n2014 a total of 2924 victims who were killed by regime’s forces and
\ntheir loyal militias in addition of the armed groups. 75% of them were
\ncivilians reaching a total of 2184 victims; however the other 740
\nremaining victims were armed opposition forces and rebels accumulating a
\nrate of 25% approximately.<\/p>\n

DCHRS documented a total of 325 children victims at a rate of 11% of the
\ntotal victims. In addition the number of documented women was 235
\nvictims at a rate of 8%.<\/p>\n

DCHRS analyzed that the main cause of death for 1119 victims was
\nindiscriminate shelling and airstrikes targeting the residential areas.
\nFurthermore; the cases of extrajudicial killings and field executions
\nthat were perpetrated by regime’s forces resulted in the death of 65
\nvictims. In addition the total number of victims who were tortured to
\ndeath the prisons and the detentions centers of the Syrian security
\nauthorities was 214 victims.<\/p>\n

The province of Aleppo, which is witnessing a reckless barrels-assault
\nby the regime, recorded highest number of casualties totaling in 1216
\nwhere 962 out of them were civilians. Finally the center documented 19
\nnon-Syrian citizens from other nationalities who were fighting with
\nSyrian Armed oppositions.<\/p>\n

DCHRS learned that the Syrian regime forces continue to target civilians
\nand they use direct brutal violence against them. As a result the
\nnumber of civilians reached 75% of the total number of victims. Also
\nsince 41% of the death cases were caused by shelling, missiles, and
\nairstrikes. DCHRS indicates and stresses that such high number of
\ncasualties in correlation to the cruel cause of deaths are obvious
\nevidences that the Syrian regime forces are intentionally targeting
\ncivilians, ruthlessly punishing them, and recklessly ignoring any basic
\nright of their existence. Furthermore the results clearly stated the
\nviolations of international human rights laws and humanitarian laws even
\nwith other causes of deaths such as torture, extrajudicial killings,
\nand other forms of violations that are categorized under war crimes and
\ncrimes against humanity.<\/p>\n

DCHRS demands protecting civilians according to the laws approved by the
\nU.N in 2005. In addition since DCHRS is a member of the International
\nCoalition for the Responsibility to Protect (ICRtoP), DCHRS appeals to
\nthe international community to practically enforce the “Responsibility
\nto Protect”. Furthermore DCHRS calls all the international medical and
\nhumanitarian organizations to provide support, medical assistance, and
\nrelief to ease the suffering of the Syrian people inside Syria and
\nabroad. Finally DCHRS demands to prosecute the perpetrators of war
\ncrimes and crimes against humanity and to bring them to justice.<\/p>\n

DCHRS worked on a variety of documentation projects. Such projects
\nincluded daily casualty reports, massacre reports, and other human
\nrights violations reports. Also DCHRS has been working on advocacy and
\nlobbying in different human rights institutions in order to educate and
\nacknowledge about the deteriorating human rights situation in Syria.
\nDCHRS opened local offices in Syria in order to document, collect, and
\nobserve human rights violations on the ground. After the launch of the
\nSyrian revolution, the center increased its activities through working,
\ncommunicating, and coordinating with many members and activists. Thus
\nthe center began documenting daily violations committed by the Syrian
\nregime forces that can be classified as crimes against humanities and
\nwar crimes. Such violations included: extrajudicial killings, massacres,
\narbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, rape, torture in
\nprisons. DCHRS submitted those reports to many international and
\nregional human rights organizations and communicated with the Report of
\nthe independent international commission of inquiry on the Syrian Arab
\nRepublic on Syria. \n<\/div>\n
