{"id":1564,"date":"2014-02-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=1564","title":{"rendered":"SYRIAN LAWYERS AND JUDGES TO ESTABLISH SYRIAN SPECIAL COURT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"center\">\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/syriatransitionaljustice.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/SCTJ_DCHRS_PR_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Special Court to Prosecute Perpetrators of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity<\/a><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nGaziantep, Turkey &ndash;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/syriatransitionaljustice.org\/en\/\">The Syrian Commission for  Transitional Justice<\/a>&nbsp;and  the&nbsp;<a href=\"..\/english\/news.php\">Damascus Center for Human Rights  Studies<\/a>&nbsp;announced  today that it will hold a meeting on February 6 and 7 in Istanbul, Turkey for  considering means of establishing a Syrian Special Court to prosecute  perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria. Syrian  lawyers, judges, human rights organizations, and victims of human rights abuses  are expected to attend the gathering in order to provide insight into future  Syrian accountability and reconciliation processes.&nbsp; At the meeting,  Syrian human rights organizations are also scheduled to discuss methods for  establishing a central database of human rights violations in Syria to serve as  a unified cache of evidence for future prosecutions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Radwan Ziadeh, head of  the Syrian Commission for Transitional Justice explained the importance of  creating a Syrian Special Court, saying, &ldquo;The only hope for breaking the  endless cycle of impunity in Syria is to immediately create a Special Court  capable of holding perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity  accountable for their actions.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Syrian Interim Government  established&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/syriatransitionaljustice.org\/en\/\">the Syrian Commission for  Transitional Justice<\/a>&nbsp;in  November 2013.
