{"id":1515,"date":"2013-12-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-12-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dchrs.org\/?p=1515","title":{"rendered":"Ongoing arbitrary detention of human rights defender Abdulhadi Sheikh Awad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nThe Euro-<a href=\\\"http:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/r\/_ylt=A0oG7tr.HrFSAW0ATaFXNyoA%3b_ylu=X3oDMTExZnZqcGozBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkA1VJQzFfMQ--\/SIG=11lahmk0q\/EXP=1387368318\/%2a%2ahttp:\/www.euromedrights.org\/eng\/\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Mediterranean Human Rights Network<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;(EMHRN) and the Gulf Centre for  Human Rights (GCHR) express their deep concern following the arbitrary  detention of human rights defender,&nbsp;<strong>Abdulhadi  Sheikh Awad<\/strong>. He is the director of the Syrian Democratic Institute and has  been involved also in aid efforts in the context of the conflict in Syria.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to information  received, Abdulhadi Sheikh Awad was arrested at the immigration office, close  to the Syrian-Lebanese border, on 8 December 2013, by members of the  governmental security forces while he was heading to Beirut. He has been denied  access to lawyers and to his family. Reports confirmed that still no charges  were brought against him.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt is believed that the detention  of Abdulhadi Sheikh Awad is solely related to his peaceful and legitimate  humanitarian activities. The Syrian government has prosecuted a number of civil  society and humanitarian activists before the Anti-Terrorism Court, a special  court enacted in July 2012 by the Syrian government that fails to comply with  international standards of fair trial and due process.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>The EMHRN and GCHR urge the  Syrian authorities to:<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Immediately and unconditionally release human rights       defender Abdulhadi Sheikh Awad; <\/li>\n<li>Immediately ensure that Abdulhadi Sheikh Awad has an       unfettered access to his lawyer and family; <\/li>\n<li>Take all necessary measures to guarantee the physical       and psychological integrity and security of Abdulhadi Sheik Awad while he       remains in detention; <\/li>\n<li>Guarantee in all circumstances that all human rights       defenders in Syria are able to carry out their legitimate activities       without fear of reprisals and free of all restrictions including judicial       harassment.&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSource URL\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\\\"http:\/\/www.euromedrights.org\/eng\/2013\/12\/18\/syria-ongoing-arbitrary-detention-of-human-rights-defender-abdulhadi-sheikh-awad\/\\\">http:\/\/www.euromedrights.org\/eng\/2013\/12\/18\/syria-ongoing-arbitrary-detention-of-human-rights-defender-abdulhadi-sheikh-awad\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network&nbsp;(EMHRN) and the Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) express their deep concern following the arbitrary detention of human rights defender,&nbsp;Abdulhadi Sheikh Awad.
