Dear all,

Syria’s longstanding poor human rights situation has
deteriorated sharply since mid March with the rise of largely peaceful
protests, which similarly to elsewhere in the region have called for more
political freedoms, an end to corruption and increasingly for President Bashar
al-Assad to stand down.

Reject Syria’s Bid for Human Rights Council Seat

(Geneva, April 29, 2011) – The United Nations Human Rights
Council should strongly condemn repression of peaceful protests in Syria and
mount an investigation into recent violence, Human Rights Watch said. The
council is meeting to discuss Syria on April 29, 2011, following a request for
a special session by 16 council members, including the United States, South
Korea, Mexico, Senegal, and Zambia.

Copenhagen 29 April 2011. The Euro-Mediterranean Human
Rights Network (EMHRN) calls on the European Union to urgently adopt sanctions
to respond to the continuous escalation of violence used by the Syrian
authorities to repress the peaceful movement of protest.

Center for Human Rights Studies, the Committees for the Defense of Democracy
Freedom and Human Rights in Syria, and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal
Rights, strongly condemn the shameful stance taken by the Organization of the
Islamic Conference (OIC).

Paris-New York-Geneva, April 27, 2011 – While negotiations
are underway among the members of the United 
Nations Security Council (UNSC) about a possible statement on Syria, the
UN Human Rights Council (HRC) has decided to convene a Special Session on the
human rights situation in Syria on April 29, 2011. “At last, the International
Community seems to be willing to consider its responsibilities towards Syrian
victims” stated Souhayr Belhassen, President of the International Federation
for Human Rights.
